Why astrologers use asteroids

The planets from the Sun to Pluto carry most of the traditional meanings, but the chart's feminine side rests on only two of them, the Moon and Venus. Many modern astrologers add the four asteroids named for goddesses to fill that picture out: the mother in Ceres, the strategist in Pallas, the wife in Juno and the priestess in Vesta. They are read as quieter voices than the planets, and they matter most when they sit close to a planet or an angle of the chart.

The four at a glance

Asteroid Read as Around the zodiac In each sign, on average
Ceres Nurture, food, loss and return 4.6 years 140 days
Pallas Wisdom, strategy and pattern 4.6 years 141 days
Juno Marriage, commitment and partnership 4.4 years 133 days
Vesta Devotion, focus and the sacred flame 3.6 years 110 days

Juno has its own page, the Juno sign calculator, with its readings in every sign and house. Chiron, another minor body, is read as the wounded healer, and Black Moon Lilith, a point of the Moon's orbit, as the wild and rejected self.

Reading an asteroid in your chart

Start with the sign, which colors how the asteroid's theme shows up, then the house, which shows where in life it plays out. The contact list includes every qualifying aspect to the ten planets and, with a birth time, the Ascendant and Midheaven. Ceres on your Moon, for instance, is read as care and nurture at the center of your emotional life.

Filter by asteroid, aspect or planet to inspect a connection. Each row shows both positions and the orb, the distance from the exact aspect. Print and Copy for my AI include the four placements and every contact matching those filters. The copy leaves out your birth date, time and place.

Without a birth time, sign changes during the local day are listed with both possibilities. Degrees, motion and contacts use local noon; the houses, Moon contacts and angle contacts are omitted. With a birth time, the result names the house system actually used, including a polar fallback.

How it is worked out

The positions come from NASA JPL Horizons, using apparent positions viewed from Earth's center, sampled every five days and interpolated between samples. Usable coverage is January 6, 1900 through December 18, 2100 at midnight UTC. At 60 tested instants, all four agree with the Swiss Ephemeris to within 4 arcseconds; this is a comparison sample, not an accuracy guarantee for every date. Unknown-time sign checks use half-hour steps. Crossings are estimated from the table and displayed to the nearest minute.

The houses follow the house system chosen in Chart settings (Placidus by default, with Porphyry used where Placidus is unavailable). Contacts use 3° for the conjunction, opposition, square and trine, 2° for the sextile. Your birth details stay in your browser.

The four asteroids

The first four asteroids ever found, between 1801 and 1807, which astrologers read in the chart beside the planets.

Ceres

Nurture, food, loss and return

Ceres, the largest body in the asteroid belt and counted a dwarf planet since 2006, is named for the Roman goddess of grain and the harvest, the mother whose daughter Proserpina was carried off to the underworld. Astrologers read her as how you nurture and need to be nurtured, your relationship with food and the body, and the cycles of loss and return.

Pallas

Wisdom, strategy and pattern

Pallas, the second asteroid found, in 1802, is named for Pallas Athena, goddess of wisdom, strategy and crafts. Astrologers read her as how you think in patterns, solve problems and fight for causes: your creative intelligence and your sense of justice.

Juno

Marriage, commitment and partnership

Juno, found in 1804, is named for the queen of the Roman gods, wife of Jupiter and protector of marriage. Astrologers read her as what you need from a committed partner, how you keep your promises, and where questions of loyalty, equality and jealousy come up.

Vesta

Devotion, focus and the sacred flame

Vesta, found in 1807 and the brightest asteroid seen from Earth, is named for the Roman goddess of the hearth, whose sacred flame the Vestal Virgins kept burning. Astrologers read her as what you devote yourself to, how you focus and guard your energy, and what you hold sacred.

Questions

Which asteroids do astrologers use?

Mostly the first four ever found: Ceres in 1801, Pallas in 1802, Juno in 1804 and Vesta in 1807, all named for Roman goddesses. Astrologers read them beside the Moon and Venus as further sides of care, intelligence, partnership and devotion.

What does Ceres mean in astrology?

Ceres, the goddess of the harvest and a mother who lost her daughter to the underworld and won her back, is read as how you nurture and want to be nurtured, your relationship with food and the body, and cycles of loss and return.

What do Pallas and Vesta mean?

Pallas, named for Athena, is read as your practical wisdom: how you see patterns, plan and solve problems, and your sense of justice. Vesta, the goddess of the hearth, is read as what you devote yourself to and how you focus your energy.

Do I need my birth time?

A birth time gives the houses, Moon contacts and angle contacts. Without one, each asteroid's sign is checked across the local birth day; a sign change shows both possibilities. Degrees, motion and the remaining contacts use a labeled noon reference.

How long does each asteroid stay in a sign?

Vesta goes around the zodiac in about 3.6 years, spending about 110 days in each sign on average; Juno takes about 4.4 years, and Ceres and Pallas about 4.6. Each is retrograde about a fifth of the time, and a retrograde loop can hold it in one sign for most of a year.

How accurate are the positions?

The positions come from a table of NASA JPL Horizons positions every five days, interpolated between samples. At 60 tested instants in 1900–2100, all four agree with the Swiss Ephemeris to within 4 arcseconds. That comparison does not remove uncertainty from an unknown birth time.
