How annual profections work

Annual profections are one of the oldest timing techniques in astrology, used by Hellenistic astrologers such as Vettius Valens in the 2nd century. The idea is simple: your rising sign moves on one sign for every year of life. The year from your birth to your first birthday belongs to the rising sign and the 1st house; the year after to the next sign and the 2nd house; and so on round the chart. After twelve years the count is back at the 1st house, so 1st house years fall at ages 0, 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 84.

Each year activates one house, and with it that house's topics, from money in the 2nd to career in the 10th. The sections below give the reading for each.

The lord of the year

The sign a year reaches has a ruling planet, and that planet becomes the lord of the year, its time lord. Profections use the seven traditional rulers, so Scorpio's year belongs to Mars, Aquarius's to Saturn and Pisces's to Jupiter. Astrologers read the lord's condition in your birth chart, its sign, house and aspects, as a description of the year, and watch its transits during the year for when things happen. In a 1st house year the lord is your own chart ruler, by the traditional rulers.

Reading a profection year

  • The house. Its topics are the year's focus.
  • The lord. Where it sits in your birth chart, and how strong it is there, colors the year. A lord in its own sign or exaltation is read as helpful; one in detriment or fall, as harder work.
  • Planets in the activated sign. Any planet in that sign at your birth is read as coming forward during the year.
  • Transits of the lord. When the lord of the year changes sign, turns retrograde or meets your natal planets, astrologers expect the year's events.

These are readings from astrological tradition, for reflection rather than prediction.

Monthly profections

The same count works inside a year. Starting from your birthday, each month moves on one sign, so the first month has the year's own sign and lord, and the twelfth has the sign just before it. The calculator counts calendar months from your birthday. Some astrologers use twelve equal months of about 30 days instead; the dates differ by a few days, not the order.

The twelve-year cycle

Because the count repeats every twelve years, each year echoes the years twelve before and after it. Your 10th house years, at ages 9, 21, 33, 45, 57, 69, 81 and 93, share their themes, and so do the others. Astrologers often look back at the last year with the same house and lord to see how the coming one might play out.

A 1st house year puts the focus on you: your body, health, appearance and direction. It starts a new twelve-year cycle, and its lord is your own chart ruler (the traditional one), so astrologers read it as a year to begin things.

2nd house year

Ages 1, 13, 25, 37, 49, 61, 73 and 85 · money, possessions and self-worth

A 2nd house year turns to money, possessions and resources: what you earn, spend and value, and the means to support yourself.

3rd house year

Ages 2, 14, 26, 38, 50, 62, 74 and 86 · communication, siblings and daily travel

A 3rd house year is read as busy and local: communication, writing, study, siblings, neighbors and short trips.

4th house year

Ages 3, 15, 27, 39, 51, 63, 75 and 87 · home, family and roots

A 4th house year centers on home, family, parents, property and roots. Moving, renovating and caring for family are classic themes.

5th house year

What is my profection year?

The house of your birth chart that your current year of life activates. Count your age in signs from your rising sign: at birth it is the 1st house, at age 1 the 2nd, and so on, back to the 1st house at 12, 24, 36, 48, 60, 72 and 84. The calculator does the counting and gives the sign, the house and the lord of the year.

What is the lord of the year?

The planet that rules the sign your profection has reached, using the traditional rulers (Mars for Scorpio, Saturn for Aquarius, Jupiter for Pisces). Astrologers read it as the year's time lord: its place in your birth chart, and its movements during the year, are read for how the year unfolds.

Does the profection year start on my birthday?

Yes, in the usual method each year runs from one birthday to the next, and the calculator follows that. Some astrologers start it at the solar return instead, the moment the Sun returns to its place at your birth, which is within about a day of the birthday.

Why does it count whole signs?

Profections come from Hellenistic astrology, which counted houses in whole signs: the rising sign is the whole 1st house, the next sign the 2nd, and so on. So the calculator counts signs from your rising sign, whatever house system you use for the rest of your chart.

Do I need my birth time?

Yes, for the rising sign the count starts from, which changes about every two hours. Without a time the calculator uses the rising sign at noon and lets you pick yours if you know it.
