What void of course means
The Moon moves through a sign in about two and a quarter days, and on the way it makes aspects to the other planets: conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions. After the last of those, it has nothing more to connect to in that sign until it crosses into the next one. That stretch is the void of course. The idea is old: William Lilly described a planet void of course in 1647, and today it is one of the most widely used timing rules in electional astrology, the art of choosing a good moment.
How long void periods last
In 2026 the Moon goes void about 160 times, once per change of sign. Most void periods are short: half last less than 7 hours, and 17 last less than an hour. A few run long when the Moon's last aspect comes early in a sign: 20 last more than a day, and the longest almost two days. Over the year the Moon is void about 19% of the time.
Working with a void Moon
Astrologers advise against beginnings during a void Moon: new projects, contracts, launches, big purchases, first meetings. The traditional saying is that nothing will come of it, or that it will turn out differently than planned. The same hours are read as good for rest, routine work, research, reflection and finishing things already begun. The void ends the moment the Moon enters its next sign, which today's Moon sign shows with the time, and the planetary hours are the other classic tool for choosing a time of day.
How it is worked out
The Moon's position and the planets' come from the site's own ephemeris, the same one behind every chart here. Every exact aspect between the Moon and a planet is found to the minute, and the void period runs from the last one before a sign change to the change itself.
