What the Vertex is
The Vertex is the point where the ecliptic, the Sun's path, crosses the prime vertical in the west: the great circle that runs through the east and west points of the horizon and the point straight overhead. It turns with the sky like the Ascendant and the Midheaven, so it depends on the exact birth time and place. Astrologers began using it in the 20th century and read it as a point of fate: encounters, often with other people, that seem to arrive on their own and redirect your life.
Where it falls
Because the prime vertical meets the ecliptic in the west, the Vertex always sits in the western half of the chart, between the IC and the Midheaven, and usually in the 5th to 8th house, around the Descendant: the side of the chart read for other people. That placement is part of its reputation as a point of meetings. Opposite it, near the Ascendant, is the Anti-Vertex, read as your own part in those meetings.
Reading your Vertex
The sign colors the kind of fated encounters: Libra for partnerships, Capricorn for career, Sagittarius for travel and teachers.
The house is read as the area of life where they happen.
Planets on it, within a few degrees, are read as part of that story.
In synastry, another person's planet or angle on your Vertex is read as a sign that the meeting is meant to be.
These are readings from astrological tradition, for reflection rather than prediction.

Questions
What is the Vertex in astrology?
The point in the west where the prime vertical, the circle through the east and west points and the point overhead, crosses the Sun's path. It is a 20th-century addition to astrology, read as a point of fate: the people and events that seem to arrive on their own and change your course.
How do I find my Vertex?
It needs your exact birth time and place, since it moves round the whole zodiac in a day. Enter them above: the calculator gives the Vertex's sign, degree and house, any planet within 3° of it and the Anti-Vertex opposite.
Why is my Vertex in the 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th house?
Because it always lies on the western side of the chart: the prime vertical meets the Sun's path in the west, so the Vertex falls between the IC and the Midheaven, around the Descendant. That is usually the 5th to 8th house, in about 85% of charts, and otherwise the 4th or the 9th.
What does the Vertex mean in synastry?
When another person's planet or angle falls on your Vertex, astrologers read the meeting as fated: the relationship feels meant to be, for better or worse. Contacts with the Sun, the Moon, Venus and the Ascendant are the ones most watched.
What is the Anti-Vertex?
The point exactly opposite the Vertex, in the east, near the Ascendant. Where the Vertex is read as what comes to you through others, the Anti-Vertex is read as your own side of those meetings.
