What a life path number is
In numerology, the life path number is the number of your birth date, and the most important number in your chart. Numerologists read it as the road you walk in this life: the talents you bring to it, the kind of experiences it holds and the lessons it keeps offering. It is always one of the single digits 1 to 9, or one of the master numbers 11, 22 and 33.
The calculator above works it out for any date, shows each step of the arithmetic, and reads the number the way numerology traditionally does. It also gives your birthday number and your personal year, and with your full birth name, your expression, soul urge, personality and maturity numbers.
Two ways to add it up
Most numerologists reduce the month, the day and the year to single digits first, keeping 11 and 22 whole, and only then add the three together. Others add every digit of the date at once. The two always end on the same final digit, but not always on the same master number: from 1940 to 2019 the two methods disagree on about one birthday in eight. For January 5, 1940, reducing each part gives 1 + 5 + 5 = 11, a master number, while adding every digit gives 1 + 5 + 1 + 9 + 4 + 0 = 20, which reduces to 2. The calculator shows both whenever they differ, and goes by the first, the method that keeps master numbers.
Master numbers and karmic debt
The master numbers 11, 22 and 33 are the only two-digit numbers numerology keeps. They are read as the heightened forms of 2, 4 and 6, with larger gifts and heavier demands.
Four other two-digit numbers, 13, 14, 16 and 19, are called karmic debt numbers. When the arithmetic of your life path passes through one of them, or you were born on the 13th, 14th, 16th or 19th, numerologists read a particular lesson carried into this life: patient work for 13, moderation for 14, humility for 16 and accepting help for 19. The calculator marks them when they appear.
How common each number is
Counted over every date from 1950 to 2009 by the calculator's method, six numbers come up on almost exactly one date in nine. The master numbers take their share from 2, 4 and 6: 2 and 11 together make one date in nine, as do 4 and 22, and 6 and 33. That makes 33 the rarest life path, at under 1% of dates.

Your name numbers
Your name has numbers too, from the Pythagorean table that gives each letter a value from 1 to 9, going round the alphabet in order: A is 1, B is 2 and I is 9; J starts again at 1, and so on to Z, which is 8. The older Chaldean system values letters by their sound instead, from 1 to 8; the Chaldean numerology calculator works your name out that way.
- Expression, or destiny, adds every letter: your natural talents and what you are here to do.
- Soul urge, or heart's desire, adds the vowels: what you want deep down.
- Personality adds the consonants: how others see you before they know you.
- Maturity adds your life path and expression: what you grow into later in life.
Use your full name as it was on your birth certificate. The calculator counts Y as a consonant; some numerologists count it as a vowel when it sounds like one.
Your personal year
The personal year adds your birth month and day to the current calendar year, reduced to a single digit. It runs in a cycle of nine: a 1 year for beginnings, a 5 year for change, a 9 year for endings and clearing out. Numerologists use it to read the tone of each year, and the calculator gives yours for this year and the next.
