How the Moon moves through the signs

The Moon is the fastest-moving body in the sky: it travels about 13° a day against the zodiac, a whole sign in two to three days, and once around all twelve in 27.3 days. Its speed changes with its distance from Earth, so a stay in one sign lasts anywhere from about 47 to 61 hours, 55 on average. That adds up to about 160 changes of sign a year.

The Moon's phase and its sign run on different clocks. It passes through all twelve signs in 27.3 days, but goes from new Moon to new Moon in 29.5, because the Sun moves on in the meantime. So each month's new and full Moons fall in different signs: a new Moon always shares the Sun's sign, and a full Moon sits in the sign opposite it. How often does the Moon change signs?

About every two and a quarter days. The Moon goes once around the zodiac in 27.3 days, so it spends about 55 hours in each sign: as little as 47 hours when it moves fastest and as much as 61 when it moves slowest. That makes about 160 changes of sign a year.

Is today's Moon sign the same everywhere?

Yes. The Moon enters a sign at the same instant for everyone on Earth; only the clock time differs from one time zone to another. That is why the times on this page are shown in yours, and why, on the day of a change, people in different time zones can see it on different dates.

What is the difference between today's Moon sign and my Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is where the Moon was when you were born, and it never changes. Today's Moon sign is where the Moon is now. Astrologers read today's Moon against your birth chart as a transit; the transit chart shows those for any day.

What does the Moon's sign mean for the day?

Astrologers read the Moon as the emotional weather of the day, colored by the sign it is passing through: brisk in Aries, unhurried in Taurus, chatty in Gemini, and so on. The list below gives each sign's traditional mood. It describes a mood, not a forecast.
