What your rising sign describes
Of the big three, the rising sign is the most personal to your moment of birth. Your Sun sign is shared with everyone born within about a month of you, but your Ascendant depends on the minute and the place. Astrologers read it as the lens you look through and the way you meet new situations: your first reactions, your style and the impression you make before people get to know you. It also sets up the houses: the sign on the Ascendant rules the 1st house, and every other house follows from it.

Why the exact time matters
The Earth turns once a day, so the whole zodiac passes over the eastern horizon every 24 hours. On average a sign takes two hours to rise, but not evenly: because the ecliptic is tilted, some signs rise in well under an hour at high latitudes and others take three or more. The calculator shows your Ascendant to the minute of arc. If it is within a degree or two of the next sign, a birth time a few minutes off could change it, and it is worth checking your birth certificate.
When you don't know your birth time
Tick I don't know the birth time and the calculator builds a table of every rising sign for your birth date, with the local clock time each one started and ended at your birthplace. If you know roughly when you were born, "in the morning" or "just after lunch", the table narrows it to one or two signs. Astrologers sometimes estimate an unknown time from life events, a process called rectification, which is beyond what this calculator does.
