Every Human Design chart has one of five types, decided by two things: whether the Sacral center is defined, and whether a motor reaches the Throat. Here is each type, its strategy and signature, and how common it is.
Each type
What makes each type and how it is read, with a schematic bodygraph: one example channel, never anyone's chart.
Generator
38% of charts
The channel of the Beat (2-14) defines the Sacral and the G, and nothing wires a motor to the Throat.
Generators have a defined Sacral center, the motor of life force, and no motor wired to the Throat. Human Design reads them as the builders of the world: sustainable energy for work they love, renewed by sleep. The strategy is to respond, noticing the gut's yes or no to what life brings, rather than starting things cold. Satisfaction signals being on track; frustration is the signal of pushing against the design.
The channel of Charisma (20-34) runs straight from the Sacral to the Throat.
Manifesting Generators have the Generator's defined Sacral plus a motor connected to the Throat, so a response can turn into action at once. The tradition sees them as fast and many-sided, often skipping steps and doing several things at once. They respond first, then tell the people affected before they move. Satisfaction marks the right path; frustration and anger mark a start forced without a response.
The channel of Awakening (10-20) joins the G to the Throat, with no motor defined.
Projectors have an undefined Sacral and no motor reaching the Throat. Human Design reads them as guides: people with a focused aura that sees deeply into others and into systems. For the big things in life (work, love, where to live) the strategy is to wait for the invitation, so their insight is recognized and welcomed. Success is the signature; bitterness is the sign of offering guidance where it was not asked for.
The channel of Money (21-45) joins the Heart, a motor, to the Throat, with the Sacral open.
Manifestors have a motor connected to the Throat and an undefined Sacral, the only type built to initiate without waiting. The tradition reads them as starters who set things in motion and leave others to carry them on. Their strategy is to inform the people affected before acting, which clears the resistance their independence can meet. Peace is the signature; anger is the sign of being controlled or of acting without informing.
Reflectors have no defined center at all, the rarest chart in Human Design. The tradition reads them as mirrors of their community: they take in and reflect the people and places around them, so the right environment matters more than anything. For big decisions the strategy is to wait through a full lunar cycle, about 29 days, talking the choice over as the Moon moves through every gate. Surprise is the signature; disappointment the not-self theme.
Human Design reads type from the defined centers of a chart, and only two questions matter. The first: is the Sacral, the center of life force and work, defined? The second: is a motor connected to the Throat, the center of speech and action? There are four motors, the Sacral, the Heart, the Solar Plexus and the Root, and "connected" means joined through a chain of defined channels, directly or by way of other defined centers.
A defined Sacral with no motor to the Throat makes a Generator. A defined Sacral with a motor to the Throat makes a Manifesting Generator. An open Sacral with a motor to the Throat makes a Manifestor. An open Sacral with no motor to the Throat, but at least one defined center, makes a Projector. No defined center at all makes a Reflector.
How common each type is
Measured on 10,000 birth moments spread evenly over 1950 to 2009, 38% of charts come out as Generators, 31% as Manifesting Generators, 22% as Projectors, 8% as Manifestors and 0.9% as Reflectors. The two Sacral types together make up more than two charts in three, which is why the system calls them the life force of the world. The figures are close to the ones Human Design teachers usually quote.
Strategy, signature and not-self
Each type has a strategy: the way the system says that type meets life with the least resistance. Generators respond, Manifesting Generators respond and then inform, Projectors wait for the invitation, Manifestors inform before acting and Reflectors wait a full lunar cycle. Each also has a signature, the feeling of being on track (satisfaction, success, peace or surprise), and a not-self theme, the feeling that signals being off track (frustration, bitterness, anger or disappointment).
Type is not personality
A type describes how energy works in a chart, not what someone is like. Two Generators can be as different as any two people; their gates, channels and profile tell them apart. The tradition treats the strategy as an experiment to try in daily life, not a rule to obey. The free Human Design chart calculator shows your type with the channels that make it, and the guide to inner authority covers the other half of the system's advice on decisions.
The five types at a glance
How common each type is on 10,000 birth moments spread evenly over 1950 to 2009, with the strategy, signature and not-self theme Human Design gives each.
Generator, Manifesting Generator, Projector, Manifestor and Reflector. Generators and Manifesting Generators have a defined Sacral center; Manifestors have a motor connected to the Throat without it; Projectors have neither; Reflectors have no defined centers at all.
Which Human Design type is most common?
The Generator: 38% of charts on 10,000 birth moments spread evenly over 1950 to 2009. Manifesting Generators are 31%, Projectors 22%, Manifestors 8% and Reflectors under 1%.
Is there a test for my Human Design type?
No quiz is needed: your type is calculated from your birth date, time and place, not from answers about yourself. The free Human Design chart calculator gives it in a moment, with the reasons.
What is the difference between a Generator and a Manifesting Generator?
Both have a defined Sacral. A Manifesting Generator also has a motor wired to the Throat, directly or through other defined centers, so a response can turn straight into action. The tradition reads them as faster and more many-sided.
Why are Reflectors so rare?
A Reflector needs all 26 activations to leave every one of the 36 channels incomplete. On the sample of 10,000 birth moments, that happened in fewer than one chart in a hundred.
