How to find your Saturn sign

  1. Enter your birth date. A birth time is optional, but it adds the house Saturn fell in.

  2. Choose your birth town from the list so your local time converts correctly.

  3. Press Find my Saturn sign to see the sign, its reading, the years Saturn spent there and your Saturn returns.

  4. Share your sign when it is certain, print the result, or add a birth time to open your Saturn lines on the map.

If you don't know your birth time

Without a birth time, the calculator checks Saturn's sign across the whole local birth day. If it changes, you get both possible readings and the approximate local change time. The degree, house and personal map links need a birth time; a sign-only share card is available when the sign is certain. Saturn return dates use noon as a reference and are marked approximate. You can print or save the result as a PDF.

What your Saturn sign says

Saturn is the farthest planet easily seen with the naked eye, and astrologers read it as the principle of time and structure: discipline, responsibility, limits, fear and, in the end, mastery. Traditional astrology calls it the greater malefic, the planet of hardship; modern astrologers more often call it the teacher. Your Saturn sign describes the lesson you meet again and again, and its house shows where you are tested and where, with patience, you build something that lasts.

Saturn sign The lesson astrologers read
Aries Discipline over impulse
Taurus Security, and what is worth keeping
Gemini Trusting your own voice
Cancer Letting others care for you
Leo Shining without needing approval
Virgo Knowing when good is good enough
Libra Commitment and fairness
Scorpio Trust, power and facing fears
Sagittarius Testing your beliefs
Capricorn Ambition and long-term achievement
Aquarius Better structures for the group
Pisces Giving shape to dreams

In the traditional scheme Saturn rules Capricorn and Aquarius and is exalted in Libra. In Cancer and Leo, the signs opposite its own, it is in its detriment, and in Aries, opposite Libra, in its fall. Astrologers read those placements as the harder lessons, and often the ones that teach the most.

Saturn is in Aries, its fall, until April 2028: Saturn in Aries gives every date of the passage and what astrologers read in it.

Two and a half years in each sign

Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to circle the zodiac, so it spends about two and a half years in each sign. Every year it appears to move backward for about four and a half months, and around a sign change that loop can carry it back into the sign it has just left, sometimes for as long as seven months. The section below lists the birth dates for Saturn in each sign from 1930 to 2040; the calculator gives the exact dates Saturn entered and left your sign, with a table of its signs from five years before your birth to five years after.

Your Saturn returns

Saturn comes back to the degree it held at your birth around ages 29, 58 and 88: the Saturn returns. Astrologers read the first as the real start of adulthood, a time of taking stock and deciding what to build; the second as a turn toward legacy; the third as a time of wisdom. With a birth time, the calculator lists each return's exact dates, with all three passes when a retrograde loop crosses your Saturn degree, and the Saturn return calculator adds the whole return season and whether you are in one now.

Your Saturn lines on the map

Saturn has four lines on your astrocartography map, showing where it was rising, setting, overhead and underfoot when you were born. Places near them are read as places of hard work, responsibility and lasting achievement: demanding, but rarely wasted. Read about each one in the Saturn lines guide or see them on your free astrocartography chart.

Questions

What does my Saturn sign mean?

Astrologers read Saturn as discipline, responsibility, limits and time: where you feel tested, where you work hardest, and where, over the years, you become an authority. The sign describes the lesson, and the house shows the part of life where it plays out.

Why does everyone my age have the same Saturn sign?

Saturn takes about 29 and a half years to circle the zodiac, so it spends about two and a half years in each sign, and two people born in the same school year share it about four times in five. The house, which needs a birth time, is what makes it personal.

What is the difference between my Saturn sign and my Saturn return?

Your Saturn sign is where Saturn was when you were born. Your Saturn return is when Saturn comes back to that exact degree, around ages 29, 58 and 88. This page lists the dates of each; the Saturn return calculator adds the whole return season.

Do I need my birth time?

Usually not. Saturn moves at most about an eighth of a degree a day and changes sign on only about one day in 450. On a change day, the calculator shows both possible signs and the approximate local change time. A birth time adds the degree and house, and refines return dates.

What does it mean if Saturn was retrograde when I was born?

It means Saturn appeared to move backward against the stars, as it does for about four and a half months every year, so more than one person in three is born with it retrograde. Astrologers read a retrograde Saturn as discipline that is self-imposed, with lessons revisited until they are learned.
