What Black Moon Lilith is
The Moon's orbit is not a circle but an ellipse, so the Moon's distance from Earth changes through the month. The point of the orbit farthest from Earth is the lunar apogee. Its direction, projected onto the zodiac, is what astrologers call Black Moon Lilith. The apogee itself slowly turns, carrying Lilith all the way around the zodiac in about 8.85 years, which is why it spends about nine months in each sign.
The name comes from the figure of Lilith in Jewish folklore, who left rather than be made subordinate. In a chart, Black Moon Lilith is read in that spirit: the part of you that will not be tamed, where desire, anger or independence may have been shamed, and where owning it, astrologers say, becomes a source of power.

With a birth time, the calculator adds Lilith's house, the area of life where these themes are read as playing out: in the 7th house, for example, relationships; in the 10th, career and public image.
Mean Lilith, true Lilith and the rest
There are several "Liliths", and charts often disagree because they use different ones:
- Mean Black Moon Lilith, used here and in most astrology software, follows the average motion of the apogee. It moves smoothly forward about 40 degrees a year.
- True, or osculating, Lilith follows the Moon's instantaneous orbit, which the Sun keeps distorting. It swings up to about 30 degrees either side of the mean point, so it can land in a different sign.
- Asteroid 1181 Lilith is an object in the asteroid belt, and the Dark Moon is a hypothetical second moon. Neither is the Black Moon.

Because mean Lilith takes about 8 years and 10 months to go around the zodiac, it returns to its birth position at roughly ages 9, 18, 27, 35, 44 and so on. The calculator lists the date of each return through your life, marks those already past, and shows the dates Lilith entered and left your sign. It moves steadily, with no retrograde loops, so each return is a single date.
