What Chiron is
Chiron is a small icy body, about 200 km across, found in 1977 on a long, stretched orbit that crosses Saturn's and comes close to Uranus's. Astronomers call objects like it centaurs, after the half-human, half-horse figures of Greek myth, and Chiron was the first to be recognized. Its orbit takes about 50 years, and because it is so eccentric, Chiron races through some signs and crawls through others.
Astrologers named its meaning after the myth. Chiron the centaur was a wise teacher and healer who was wounded by a poisoned arrow he could not heal in himself, yet he went on teaching and healing others. In a birth chart, Chiron is read the same way: a tender spot, often felt early in life, that becomes a source of understanding and a gift for helping others through the same thing.
Chiron through the signs
| Chiron sign | The tender spot | The gift that grows from it |
|---|---|---|
| Aries | Self-worth, taking up space | Courage, helping others find theirs |
| Taurus | Security, the body, feeling valuable | A steady sense of worth |
| Gemini | Being heard and understood | Healing communication |
| Cancer | Belonging and being nurtured | Caring for yourself and others |
| Leo | Being seen and loved as you are | Shining without needing approval |
| Virgo | Being good or useful enough | Self-acceptance, practical healing |
| Libra | Relationships and fairness | Partnering as an equal |
| Scorpio | Trust, loss and power | Guiding others through crisis |
| Sagittarius | Meaning, belief and freedom | Teaching your own truth |
| Capricorn | Authority, never successful enough | Defining success for yourself |
| Aquarius | Feeling like an outsider | Helping others belong |
| Pisces | Boundaries and feeling overwhelmed | Compassion with limits |
Chiron is slow and uneven. Over the 20th and 21st centuries it spends from about one and a half to two years in Virgo and Libra, and six and a half to eight years in Pisces and Aries, with the other signs in between. That is why whole groups of friends often share a Chiron sign. The house is the personal part: with a birth time, the calculator shows it, and the reading describes the area of life where the theme plays out.
Your Chiron return
Because its orbit takes about 50 years, Chiron comes back to its birth position once in a lifetime, around age 49 to 51. Astrologers read the Chiron return as a time to make peace with an old wound and to share what it taught you. Chiron usually crosses the degree three times over a year or so as it loops back, and the calculator lists every pass. The results also show the dates Chiron entered and left your sign, and the signs it moved through in the years around your birth.
How Chiron is calculated here
Astronomy Engine, which this site uses for the planets, does not include Chiron, so its position comes from a table of Chiron's apparent place generated with NASA JPL Horizons at five-day steps from 1900 to 2100, interpolated to your birth minute. For births outside that range the calculator shows a note instead of a position. The accuracy and sources page has the details and the tests.
Chiron on the map
Chiron also has four astrocartography lines, read as places where old wounds surface and healing becomes possible: often intense, sometimes transformative. The Chiron lines guide explains each one, and your astrocartography chart shows where they run. The North Node and Black Moon Lilith calculators cover the other two points astrologers most often read beside Chiron.
