Human Design authority

Your inner authority is how Human Design says you make decisions well. It is decided by your defined centers, in a fixed order, and half of all charts have the same one: the emotional wave.

The eight authorities at a glance

In order of precedence, each with an example chart: the centers that decide are lit. A chart's authority is the first its defined centers allow.

What inner authority is

Human Design gives every chart two tools for decisions. The strategy comes from the type and says how to meet life: to respond, to wait for an invitation, to inform. The inner authority says how to know your own answer once a choice is in front of you. The system is clear that the mind is not an authority: thinking is useful for considering, comparing and advising others, but the decision is meant to come from the body.

How it is decided

Authority follows your defined centers in a fixed order of precedence, and the first one your chart allows is yours. A defined Solar Plexus outranks everything, because its emotional wave colors every other awareness. Without it, a defined Sacral gives sacral authority; without either, a defined Spleen gives splenic authority. Next comes the Heart, as ego authority: manifested when the Heart reaches the Throat, as in a Manifestor, and projected when it joins the G, as in a Projector. A G center joined to the Throat gives self-projected authority. Charts defined only in the Head, the Ajna and the Throat have mental authority, sometimes called no inner authority, and Reflectors, with no center defined, have lunar authority.

How common each one is

On 10,000 birth moments spread evenly over 1950 to 2009, 52% of charts have emotional authority, 33% sacral and 9% splenic. The rest are rare: self-projected 2.5%, mental 1.9%, lunar 0.9%, ego manifested 0.8% and ego projected 0.4%. Emotional authority is so common because the Solar Plexus has seven gates and seven channels, three of them to the Root alone, and any one of them defines it.

Authority and strategy together

The two work in sequence: the strategy says when a choice is really in front of you, and the authority gives the answer. A Generator waits for something to respond to, then listens for the gut's yes or no; if that Generator also has a defined Solar Plexus, the answer is trusted only once the feeling has settled over time. A Projector waits for an invitation, then uses authority to decide whether to accept it. A Manifestor informs the people affected before acting, once authority has said yes.

Living with it

The tradition presents authority as something to test in small decisions before trusting it with big ones. For emotional authority that means noticing how a choice feels over several days; for sacral authority, answering yes-or-no questions out loud; for splenic, catching the first quiet knowing. The free Human Design chart calculator gives your authority with the centers that decide it.

The eight authorities

In order of precedence: a chart's authority is the first on this list its defined centers allow. Shares are from 10,000 birth moments, 1950 to 2009.

Emotional (Solar Plexus)

52% of charts · Solar Plexus defined

A defined Solar Plexus rides an emotional wave, so there is no truth in the moment. Clarity comes with time: sleep on big decisions and choose once the feeling has settled, neither high nor low.

Sacral

33% of charts · Sacral defined, Solar Plexus open

The gut responds in the moment, often as a sound (an uh-huh or an un-uh) or a pull toward or away. Answering yes-or-no questions helps it speak.

Splenic

9% of charts · Spleen defined; Solar Plexus and Sacral open

The Spleen speaks once, quietly and in the moment: an instinct about what is healthy or safe. It does not repeat itself, so the practice is to trust that first knowing.

Ego (manifested)

0.8% of charts · Heart to Throat (Manifestors)

The Heart connects to the Throat, so the truth is in what comes out: say what you want, out loud, and listen for whether your will is really behind it.

Ego (projected)

0.4% of charts · Heart to G (Projectors)

The Heart connects to the G center. The question is what you want for yourself; talking it through shows whether the will and the heart are in it.

Self-projected

2.5% of charts · G to Throat, no motor

The G center connects to the Throat. Clarity comes from hearing yourself speak: talk a decision through with someone you trust and listen to what your own voice says about direction.

Mental (no inner authority)

1.9% of charts · Only Head, Ajna and Throat defined

No inner authority below the Throat. Decisions come clear through talking them over with trusted people and paying attention to the environment you are in, rather than in the mind alone.

Lunar

0.9% of charts · No center defined (Reflectors)

With every center open, Reflectors wait through a full cycle of the Moon, about 29 days, before big decisions, noticing how the choice feels as the Moon passes through all 64 gates.

Questions

What is authority in Human Design?

The part of the chart the system says you can trust for decisions, usually a defined center below the Throat. It works with your type's strategy: the strategy says how to meet a choice, the authority how to know your answer.

What is the most common authority?

Emotional authority, from a defined Solar Plexus: 52% of charts on 10,000 birth moments from 1950 to 2009. Sacral authority comes next at 33%, then splenic at 9%.

How is authority decided?

In a fixed order: a defined Solar Plexus always gives emotional authority; otherwise a defined Sacral gives sacral; otherwise a defined Spleen gives splenic; then the Heart (ego), then the G to the Throat (self-projected), then mental authority, and lunar for Reflectors.

What does emotional authority mean?

That there is no truth in the moment. The Solar Plexus rides a wave of highs and lows, so the tradition advises waiting for clarity, often sleeping on a decision, before committing.
