Pluto in Aquarius

What Pluto in Aquarius means

Pluto is the slowest of the planets astrologers use, and the one they associate with power, death and rebirth, and whatever has been buried coming to the surface. Aquarius is the air sign of the collective: communities and networks, technology, science, reform, freedom and the future. When Pluto passes through it, astrologers expect deep and lasting change in how people organize together: who holds power, how groups make decisions, and how new technology reshapes ordinary life.

The shadow astrologers name is the same power turned cold: control dressed up as progress, crowds that silence the individual, systems that serve themselves. The usual advice with the transit is to take part rather than watch: to help shape the groups and tools you belong to.

The dates

Pluto moves so slowly that it crossed the border between Capricorn and Aquarius five times. It first entered Aquarius on March 23, 2023, backed into Capricorn on June 11, 2023, returned on January 20, 2024, backed out again on September 1, 2024, and settled into Aquarius on November 19, 2024. It stays until March 8, 2043, when it enters Pisces, backs into Aquarius on August 31, 2043, and leaves for good on January 19, 2044. It turns retrograde every year for about five months; the tables below list all 21 loops of the passage and every sign change.

The last time Pluto was in Aquarius

Pluto was last in Aquarius from 1777 to 1798, and astrologers often point to those years as its signature: the American Revolutionary War and the writing of the United States Constitution in 1787, the French Revolution from 1789, and the Declaration of the Rights of Man and of the Citizen, when ideas of liberty, equality and government by the people overturned old powers. The comparison is the kind astrology keeps making rather than a forecast; the dates are fixed.

Pluto in Aquarius in your chart

Find your rising sign in the table below to see which house of your chart Pluto crosses, the area of life where astrologers expect slow, thorough change: what no longer works falls away, and what remains grows stronger. Your Sun sign's row shows the aspect it makes to your Sun: Aquarius receives the conjunction, Leo the opposition, and Taurus and Scorpio the squares. Because Pluto moves only a degree or two a year, a contact to a planet in your chart can last two years or more; the transit chart shows them against your own birth chart, and the Pluto sign calculator gives the sign Pluto held when you were born.
