A channel joins two gates in two centers, and when both gates are active it is defined, with both its centers. Here are all 36 channels in their seven circuits, with the centers each joins and what Human Design reads in it.
The 36 channels at a glance
Every channel on the bodygraph, colored by the circuit group Human Design sorts it into. Where two gates of one group meet, the channel runs in one color from center to center.
Gates 10, 20, 34 and 57 meet at one junction to the left of the G center, so six channels share it: the four of the Integration circuit, the Brainwave (20-57) and Exploration (10-34).
What a channel is
The bodygraph has 36 channels, each joining a gate in one center to a gate in another. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active in your chart, from the Personality (black on most charts, light on this site's), the Design (red) or one of each. A defined channel defines the two centers at its ends, and the pattern of defined centers is what gives a chart its type, authority and definition. Human Design reads each defined channel as a fixed, reliable gift, a way of working you can count on.
How many you have
On 10,000 birth moments spread evenly over 1950 to 2009, three defined channels is the most common count, in 26% of charts, and the middle chart has three. About 19% have two and 22% four; fewer than one chart in a hundred has none, which makes a Reflector. More channels do not make a chart better: a chart with one channel and a chart with seven are read as different kinds of design, not stronger and weaker ones.
Channels between people
When one person has one gate of a channel and another person the other, the channel is defined only when they are together. Human Design calls this an electromagnetic connection and reads it as a source of both attraction and friction. When both people have the same channel it is called companionship; when one has a whole channel and the other only one of its gates, the system speaks of compromise, and when one has a channel the other lacks entirely, of dominance.
The seven circuits
Human Design sorts the channels into circuits, families of channels that share a theme, and the circuits into three groups. The Individual circuits (Knowing, Centering and Integration, 15 channels) are keynoted by empowerment: they are read as bringing something new that changes others by example. The Tribal circuits (Ego and Defense, 7 channels) are keynoted by support: family, work, resources and care. The Collective circuits (Logic and Abstract, 14 channels) are keynoted by sharing: experience and understanding offered to society as a whole.
Reading the list below
The channels are grouped by circuit, from the Individual to the Tribal and the Collective, and each gives the two centers it joins, its two gates with their names and a short reading. The 64 gates are listed with their stretch of the zodiac, and the free Human Design chart calculator shows which channels are defined in your chart and which gates hang open.
The 36 channels by circuit
Every channel in the circuit Human Design sorts it into, with the two centers it joins. A channel is defined when both of its gates are active, in either the Personality or the Design.
Individual circuits: keynote empowerment
Knowing circuit: 9 channels

Questions
What is a channel in Human Design?
A connection between two gates in two different centers. When both gates are active in your chart, from either the Personality or the Design, the channel is defined and so are both centers it joins.
How many channels do most people have?
Three is the most common number: 26% of charts on 10,000 birth moments from 1950 to 2009 have exactly three defined channels, and the middle chart has three. Fewer than one chart in a hundred has none.
What does it mean when one gate is black and the other red?
The channel is defined by the Personality at one end and the Design at the other; this site draws the Personality light rather than black on screen. Human Design reads a channel as a fixed gift whichever side defines it; the colors say which part of you carries each half.
What is an electromagnetic connection?
When one person has one gate of a channel and another person has the other, so the channel is defined only when they are together. The system reads it as a source of attraction and of friction.
