The 64 Human Design gates

Each of the 64 gates is a slice of the zodiac and a hexagram of the I Ching, sitting in one of the nine centers. Here is every gate, where it falls on the zodiac and the channel it completes.

The wheel of 64 gates

Each gate holds its own stretch of the zodiac, 5°37′30″ wide, in the order the system fixes: Gate 41 at 2° Aquarius, then 19, 13, 49 and on around. Each gate is tinted by the color of its center.

Gates, hexagrams and the zodiac

Human Design takes the 64 hexagrams of the I Ching, the ancient Chinese book of changes, and lays them around the zodiac in a fixed order called the Rave Mandala. Each hexagram becomes a gate 5°37′30″ wide, and each gate is divided into six lines of 56′15″, matching the six lines of a hexagram. The order begins with Gate 41 at 2° Aquarius and runs forward through the signs: 41, 19, 13, 49, 30, 55 and on, so Gate 1 sits in the middle of Scorpio and Gate 2 in the middle of Taurus, exactly opposite.

Gates in your chart

A gate is active when a planet or point falls in it. Your chart has 26 activations: the Sun, the Earth, the two lunar nodes, the Moon and the planets from Mercury to Pluto at birth, and the same thirteen at the Design moment. Several can land in the same gate, so on 10,000 birth moments from 1950 to 2009 nine charts in ten have between 17 and 22 different active gates, and the middle chart has 20. Each is read as a theme you carry consistently, colored by the planet that activates it and the center it belongs to.

Gates and channels

Every gate sits in one center and forms half of a channel to a gate in another center; a few gates, such as 10, 20, 34 and 57, form half of several channels. When both gates of a channel are active the channel is defined, and so are the centers it joins. A gate whose partner is not active is a hanging gate: the system reads it as a theme you look for in others, who can complete the channel when you are together. The 36 channels are listed with the gates that make them.

Reading the list below

Each gate below gives its name, its center, the stretch of the tropical zodiac it covers and the channel or channels it completes, with a short reading. The names are the keynotes most Human Design teachers use, and the I Ching hexagram of the same number is named in each reading. The free Human Design chart calculator shows which of these gates are active in your chart and on which side.

Questions

What are gates in Human Design?

The 64 gates are the hexagrams of the I Ching laid around the zodiac, each 5°37′30″ wide. A planet in a gate activates it; a gate sits in one of the nine centers and forms half of one or more channels.

How do I know which gates I have?

Your chart lists 26 activations: thirteen points at birth and thirteen at the Design moment, 88° of the Sun earlier. Each falls in one gate and line. The free Human Design chart calculator lists all of them.

What is a hanging gate?

An active gate whose partner at the other end of the channel is not active, so the channel is not defined. It is read as a theme you carry and look for in other people, who may complete the channel for you.

Where does the gate wheel start?

At Gate 41, at 2° Aquarius (tropical), the start of what the system calls the Human Design year, around January 22. The gates then run in a fixed order around the zodiac, which is not the numerical order.
