Planet lines

Mercury lines in astrocartography

Mercury is the planet of the mind: words, learning, trade and travel. Its lines show where your curiosity and communication are read as coming alive.

Mercury is associated with mind, words and connections. Each of its four lines shows where it was on one of the four angles when you were born.

Mercury in astrocartography

Mercury rules thinking, speaking, writing, learning, trading and short journeys. It is the messenger: quick, curious, adaptable and a little restless. Near a Mercury line, astrologers say, the mind is more active. Conversations flow, ideas arrive, deals get done, and you may find yourself studying, teaching or writing more than usual.

Why Mercury's lines hug the Sun's

Seen from Earth, Mercury never gets more than about 28° from the Sun. That means your Mercury lines always run close to your Sun lines: your Mercury MC line is never far east or west of your Sun MC line, and the same for the other angles. If a place is on your Sun line, it is often within reach of a Mercury line too, and astrologers often read the two together as recognition for your ideas.

The four Mercury lines compared

Mercury ASC Rising A quick, curious, talkative you
Mercury DSC Setting Partnerships of ideas; contracts and negotiation
Mercury MC Overhead Careers in media, teaching, trade and technology
Mercury IC Underfoot Studying, writing or working from home

Your Mercury sign and speed

The line shows where; your Mercury sign and condition show how. Mercury in Gemini or Virgo is at home and quick; in Pisces it thinks in images and feelings. Mercury is also retrograde about three times a year for three weeks at a time. Astrologers read a retrograde birth Mercury as a reflective, revising mind, and some suggest its lines suit research, editing and returning to old ideas.

Finding your Mercury lines

Show them on your astrocartography map, tap a city for the distance to each, or read the lines for career guide, where the Mercury MC is one of the key lines for media and teaching work. Every line explained covers the rest of the map.

Mercury parans

Mercury parans are read as the mind meeting another planet's theme along one latitude. Mercury and Jupiter parans are described as big ideas and good teaching; Mercury and Venus as graceful words and art; Mercury and Uranus as original, inventive thinking; Mercury and Saturn as serious, disciplined study. The Parans tab lists yours.

Media, teaching or sales career Mercury MC
Deals, contracts, partnerships Mercury DSC

Do Mercury lines matter as much as Sun lines?

Astrologers usually rank the Sun and Moon lines as the most personal, then Mercury, Venus and Mars. Mercury's lines are quieter in feeling but very practical: they are often where the day-to-day of study, work and conversation goes well. If your birth chart emphasises Mercury, with the Sun in Gemini or Virgo or Mercury on an angle, its lines are read as more important for you.

Questions

Is the Mercury line good in astrocartography?

It is usually read as positive and practical: good for learning, writing, networking and business. Its downside is restlessness and nervous energy.

Why is my Mercury line always near my Sun line?

Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun in the sky, so your Mercury lines always run fairly close to your Sun lines, a little east or west of them.

Which Mercury line is best for a writer?

The Mercury MC is read as being known for your words and ideas; the Mercury IC as a quiet place to write; the Mercury ASC as a sharper, more expressive mind.
