The Human Design Reflector

Reflectors are the rarest type in Human Design, with not a single defined center. Here is what makes a Reflector, why the strategy follows the Moon, and how rare the chart really is, measured on 10,000 birth moments.

What makes a Reflector

Every Human Design chart has 26 activations: the Sun, the Earth, the two lunar nodes, the Moon and the planets from Mercury to Pluto, at birth and at the Design moment about three months earlier. Each falls in one of the 64 gates, and a channel is defined when both of its gates are active. A Reflector's chart is the one where not a single channel is complete: every activated gate is missing its partner, so all nine centers are open.

That is why the type is so rare. With around twenty different gates active in a typical chart, most charts complete two to four channels, and a chart that completes none is a long way from the middle. The measured share is below.

The strategy: wait a lunar cycle

With no defined center, a Reflector has nothing fixed to decide by, so Human Design gives the type the only authority that comes from outside: the Moon. The Moon moves through every gate of the wheel in about 27 days, and as it does, it completes different channels in a Reflector's chart for about ten hours at a time, the time it spends in each gate. The strategy is to wait through a full lunar cycle, about 29 days, before a big decision, talking it over with people they trust and noticing how it feels on different days.

Small everyday choices need no such wait. The cycle is for the decisions that shape a life: a move, a job, a relationship.

Surprise and disappointment

The Reflector's signature is surprise, the feeling of delight at what life brings when things are right. The not-self theme is disappointment, which the tradition reads as a sign of the wrong place or the wrong people, or of a decision made in a hurry.

Environment and community

Human Design describes the Reflector's aura as resistant and sampling: it takes in the people and places around it without holding on to them, and reflects them back. For that reason the right environment is said to matter more to a Reflector than to any other type. Teachers describe Reflectors as a reading of their community's health: when the people around them are well, so are they.

Working it out for yourself

The free Human Design chart calculator shows whether your chart has any defined channels, and the definition guide explains what the other kinds of chart look like. Moon phase today shows where the Moon is in its cycle, and the guide to the five types compares the Reflector with the other four.

How rare a Reflector is

How many defined channels a chart has, on 10,000 birth moments. A Reflector is the chart with none: all 26 activations land without completing a single channel.

Only 92 of the 10,000 charts in the sample are Reflectors, 0.9%. Most charts have two to four channels; a chart with a single channel is already uncommon, and one with none is rarer still.

Questions

What is a Reflector in Human Design?

A chart with no defined center: none of the 36 channels is complete. Human Design reads Reflectors as mirrors of the people and places around them, with the strategy to wait a lunar cycle before big decisions.

How rare are Reflectors?

The rarest type: 0.9% of charts, 92 of the 10,000 birth moments spread evenly over 1950 to 2009 that the site measured, or fewer than one chart in 100.

What is lunar authority?

The Reflector's inner authority. With no defined center to decide by, a Reflector is advised to wait through a full cycle of the Moon, about 29 days, noticing how a decision feels as the Moon moves through every gate.

Can a Reflector have defined channels?

No. A single complete channel would define two centers, and the chart would be another type. A Reflector's chart still has active gates, often many, but none of them meets its partner.

What is the Reflector's not-self theme?

Disappointment, which the tradition reads as the sign of the wrong environment or of deciding too fast. The signature, the feeling of being on track, is surprise.
